Chandrayaan means moon craft. Its story started from Chandrayaan-1 which was the first Indian lunar probe and continue with the second hope for Indian scientist Chandrayaan-2.

Chandrayaan-1

Chandrayaan-1 was launched by the (ISRO) Indian Space Research Organization in October 2008. It was done with PSLV-XL C11 rocket. India’s space got a boost from this mission. Chandrayaan-1 was planned for 2 years but ended in 10month 6days.

Achievements of Chandrayaan-1

  1. In this mission, the satellite completed more than 3400 orbits around the moon.
  2. Chandrayaan-1 shown the first images of earth which show Asia, part of Australia and Africa with India in the centre.

The problem started with Chandrayaan-1

  1. It is observed as that temperature is around 75 degrees Celsius at 100km above the move but it was more than that.
  2. After the 9th month of mission Device used for understanding, attitude got failed.

The mission ended by ISRO Chairman Madhavan Nair statement that they lost the communication connectivity due to exceptionally high radiation, control supply units controlling both the PC frameworks on board failed.

Then comes the second hope for Indian scientist Chandrayaan-2. Chandrayaan-2 was launched on 22 July 2019. In Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III rocket.

The mission contains lunar orbiter which was developed all by India. Orbiter means a space probe that orbits a planet or other astronomical object. The Vikram lander and the Pragyan lunar rover were the orbiters that were present.

Vikram lander: In this Vikram named after Vikram Sarabhai who was the founder of India space programme.

Pragyan lunar: it contains 6 wheels robotic vehicle. Its mass is about 27 kg and works on solar power.

Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft stack entered lunar orbit on 20 August 2019 after 29 days of launching.

Highlights of Chandrayaan-2

  1. India the fourth country to land a probe on the Moon if it would have made the landing on the moon after USSR, the United States and China.
  2. India had launched this mission in US$150 million approximately which is much cheaper than NASA and ESA missions.
  3. It was the first mission which was led by two women’s the project director Muthaya Vanitha, and the mission director Ritu Karidhal.
